Assessment in the classroom is more that paper and pencil tests/quizzes. What are you already doing in your classroom to engage students in the assessment process? What new ideas have you gained so far to try in your classroom this year?

Please reply and reply to at least one of your classmates.

  4. audio recording to enhance fluency will be popular for the verbal/linguistic learner. A flip camera recording will be most popular with a visual/ spatial or bodily kinesthetic learner.

    1. I had my students do this last year (well... Kristen did it for me.....) for their independent study projects and then it was loaded onto my webpage. Then- family and neighbors of those children could enjoy the reports as well! Beth Mowrey

    2. Me, too. And I hiope to use the flip cams more this year. It seems like it would save time spent on research and presentations. It would be neat to create a movie of all the presentations and just show it.

  6. I use a variety of assessments in the classroom. I use traditional paper and pencil tests & quizzes, but I also use many other types of assessments. My students receive "participation points" daily for speaking in Spanish. They take speaking tests. My students complete projects and presentations. They use Movie Maker and Power Point to create projects and to write in Spanish. My students complete blog by using my Weebly site. They also practice their writing by using Epals, an electronic pen pal program, with students from other schools. - Katrina Kinneer

  8. I like the idea of having students record themselves independently instead of having me check every day. This may be an idea to eliminate progress monitoring by the teacher and have students assess themselves. The teacher can go back and figure the WPM and miscue rates outside class time.

  10. Students in myclassroom have multiple assessment options so they have a choice in what methods or even what medium they want to use to express what new learning they have experienced. Sometimes, they can even create their own option for assessment. They have opportunity for self-assessment and to assess others. Claire

  11. I think the filming / recording of fluency practice will both engage the students and allow them to self-monitor.

  12. Sometimes I have the students act things out or create a project showing that they understand a concept that they were taught. I will have them read orally using audacity.

  13. In my classroom, students graph their data for math facts. This year I am going to have my students use technology devices to create the graphs to track their growth.

I am interested in using the flip cameras to retrain student behaviors in the classroom.

    1. I would recommend utilizing Microsoft Excel for your graphing... the more often students use it the better.

  15. This year I had my ESL students partner/small group read an article (each group read a different article on the same topic). While they were reading aloud, I was able to walk around the room and listen to their fluency. The students were then asked to report to the other groups about their article. They enjoyed reading aloud to a small audience rather than the large group and were more relazed with each other, giving me a more acurate feel for their fluency. Kathleen Gable

  16. To engage students in the assessment process, I try to give them options, when possible. As an English teacher, I do believe that paper and pencil tests have their value (as even to become teachers we must be successful on this level of assessment), but not everything needs to be tested in this way. Many times, I try to do project-based assessments at the end of stories or units using Animoto or Photostory, Flipcam options, or by having the class comment individually on my class wikispace.

This workshop has given me some great ideas. How fun would it be to receive homework credit for making a phone call? Also, I think that finding creative ways to share using Audacity or a Flipcam, instead of presenting in front of the class, would also be fun. I am excited to work these ideas into my taeching. -Amanda
